JEM began an initiative in February, 2016, to write blogs that (1) show how widespread jubilee is in the bible, and (2) that link its presence in the bible to current issues in a way that highlights its stunning relevance to today’s ecological and economic crises.
The blogs will add to common knowledge of jubilee and correct misperceptions that have minimized its value. Whereas it is often relegated to the bargain counter, jubilee is actually a treasure of great price. It is a model of economics and behavior that has far more elements than are commonly known.
The blogs will appear irregularly but at the rate of about one per month. If you “Subscribe” on our website homepage, you will be alerted to when each blog is published.
Our blogs will take aim at the many slights Jubilee receives in the wider public arena, but also in most faith-based circles. The following four examples are particularly addressed in the first four blogs of this JEM initiative:
- Most people who use the Bible do not hear about Jubilee except as a 50th anniversary celebration.
- Most who know about Jubilee in the Bible believe it to be referred to in only a few obscure texts.
- Few people who know of Jubilee in the Bible believe it was ever practiced.
- Few people think of Jubilee as an economic model for today with guidance for behavior on both personal and systemic financial and social matters.
