    Episode 66 :: Dan Swanson: What's Trending in Jubilee's Paradigm-Shifting Mission

    In this episode, a conversation between Dan Swanson and Lee Van Ham while they are participating in a border immersion in Nogales, Sonora (Mexico) peaks into what’s trending in Jubilee’s paradigm-changing mission.

    To begin with the border immersion itself, it’s important to note that it was a pilot venture by SCUPE (Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education), Chicago, as they seek to shift their pedagogy into modules conducted at various hotspots for ministry. Nogales is a hotspot for border crossings and deportations. So after two days of visiting many sites that hold the dynamics of the border, serving meals to deportees and listening to their stories, our hearts were opened to think in new ways about what kind of ministry and service make sense in this volatile, transformative context. We spend Saturday morning being led in a 3-hour session doing contextual theology, i.e., spinning out what kind of theology truly makes a difference in this context.

    The importance of this SCUPE connection may take on far greater significance in 2016 as Jubilee may be hosting a SCUPE module in Chiapas, Mexico, dealing with the issues of Indigenous worldviews and practices that are autonomous from the Mexican gov’t and the transnational corporations eager to “develop” Chiapas’ rich resources. Again, we would do contextual theology there.

    All this has become far, far more possible because Dan Swanson is now the Mexican co-director of Jubilee Economics. He and his family live in Puebla where he has a classroom and facilities to conduct trainings to equip local people seeking to up their capacities in expressing and living their faith.

    DO PLAN TO JOIN THE JANUARY DELEGATION OR INDICATE YOUR INTEREST IN A FUTURE ONE. IT’S AN EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITY TO SEE AND DO WHAT TOURISTS NEVER, EVER DO.
